Pre-Operative Instructions – General

The following instructions should be followed closely except when overruled by specific procedural instructions:

TWO WEEKS PRIOR TO SURGERY

  • NO ASPRIN or medicines that contain aspirin as it interferes with normal blood clotting.
  • NO NSAIDS (Motrin, Advil, Aleve) as it interferes with blood clotting
  • You MAY take Tylenol or generic forms of this drug.
  • AVOID vitamins and supplements
  • NO SMOKING. Nicotine reduces blood flow to the skin and can cause complications during your recovery.

ONE WEEK PRIOR TO SURGERY

  • DO NOT drink alcohol or take any illicit substances for 24 hours prior as these can interfere with anesthesia and affect blood clotting.
  • DO NOT take any cough or cold medications without permission. Be sure to report any sights of cold, infection, boils or pustules appearing before surgery.
  • ARRANGE FOR a responsible adult to drive you to and from the facility on the day of surgery. You will not be able to leave on your own nor will a cab or bus driver be allowed to take you home from surgery.
  • ARRANGE FOR a responsible adult to spend the first 24 hours with you. You cannot be left alone directly after surgery.
  • If you’re on regular medications, please clear these with the prescribing doctor.

NIGHT BEFORE & MORNING OF SURGERY

  • DO NOT eat or drink anything – including water – after midnight the night before your surgery. No gum, candy, mints or coffee the morning of surgery.
  • DO NOT apply any of the following on your skin, hair or face the morning of surgery:
    • Makeup
    • Creams/Lotions
    • Hair Gels or Spray
    • Perfumes
    • Powders
    • Deodarant
  • You may brush your teeth, but do not drink anything
  • DO NOT wear your contacts to surgery. If you wear glasses, bring your glasses case.
  • Wear comfortable, loose-fitting clothes that do not have to be put on over your head. We suggest a button-up top and pull on pants. You will want shoes that are easy to slip on.
  • Do NOT bring any valuables or wear any jewelry. All facial and body piercings must be removed.
  • BRING ALL medications and supplements with you the day of surgery and to all post-operative visits.
